Katie has 123 she need 147 to get the box of candy and a drink. She does not have enough money she needs 23 more cent to get both.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure? Something looks out of place.
DeleteKatie doesn't have enough money to buy the candy and the drink. I know that because 123 minus 89 equals 34. In order to get both the candy and the drink she needs 23 more cents.
ReplyDeleteGreat thinking and a correct way to solve!
DeleteHere's Devon's answer - Katie has 123 cents in all. I know that because I used a strategy. I drew 3 quarters, that equals 75 cents, added 2 dimes, now 95 cents, added 3 nickels, now 110, and added 13 pennies giving a total of 123. The candy costs 89 and the drink 57, so I used partial sum equaling 146. So she doesn't have enough money. Last I said she needs more coins, so I used the number line and she needs 23 cents.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! 4 strategies:
Delete1. Drawing coungs and counting up.
2. Partial sums to get total needed.
3. Comparison of 2 numbers.
4. Number line to find the difference!
No, she needs 23 cents. She has 123 cents and needs 146 cents. I subtracted 146 -123 and I got 23.

She does not have enough. I did 57-34= 23 She needs 23 more to get both.
I counted each set of coins without using my figures. I added 75 + 20 + 15 + 13 = 123. Katie did not have enough change to buy the candy and drink because 89 + 57 = 143. I subtracted 146 - 123 = 23. Katie needs 23 cents to buy both items. Haleigh
ReplyDeleteKatie do es not have enough money to buy both the candy and drink. I know this because I used partial sums and circles. Katie has $1.23 she need .23 more to have $1.46 to buy the candy and the drink. - Zeydah
