We had 7 families tonight at the Open House. Thanks to those who could make it. For those who were unable to attend you missed some great conversation and questions other parents had. Plus you missed spending time with me! Lol!
Homework: If you are spending 3 hours a night, then something is not right. With the reading time included homework should not take more than an hour, hour an a half tops (and that's if they do it all the worksheets on monday!)! Again, my philosophy on homework is that its a practice of what I teach at school each day and offers an insight to you as parents to what is being taught. Whatever work your child does or does not finish each week is up to you and your child. I will not hold homework over their heads for class activities. I will caution you however, that the amount of homework completed will directly impact their skills in the classroom and consequently, their grades.
Another big topic of conversation tonight was AR. This is the breakdown of AR (as I understand it)... AR is the nickname for Accelerated Reader. It is just a book leveling system that schools and libraries follow so kids can easily pick out the "just right level" kind of book. Ar books also have quizzes for each books that a child takes independently and tracks the kids growth and comprehension. Kind of similar to Raz-kids, but with a different rating scale, and quizzes can not be done at home. The kids earn points on each book, and Mr. Estell will host an AR store 2 times this year in which the points are used to purchase stuff. How will I implement it in our classroom? I am hoping to have volunteers on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays between/from 9:30-11:00 that can help the kids in the Media center take and complete the quizzes and pick out ne, appropriate books. Me. Estell said he could help "train" anyone that can help in the media center with this task.
