Parents, I wanted to remind you about our homework procedures.
1. Homework is typically given out on Fridays. This allows you as parents to help your students get a jump start on the weekend, especially if you have a busy weekend.
2. Reading is the most important thing your child can do everyday.
3. Homework is due on the following Friday, unless it says a different due date on the top.
Things to know about homework:
It should be a review of what is happening in the classroom, not something new that I have never taught.
If it is a math strategy, I have been working with the children for at least 2 weeks before sending it home for practice.
If you have any questions, please reach out to me and I will help.

Welcome to the 2017-2018 School Year, (a little late)
Parents,
Can you believe that we have already finished the first quarter of 2nd grade. Not only is it finished, but we are beginning our 2nd week of the second quarter!
Things have been flying by and they do not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. A lot is changing and things are very new to you as 2nd grade parents. I would like to say thanks to all of you who are supporting your child and me, everyday.
Already we have had some great things happen this year:
We shared in the excitement of 2nd Grade on the 2nd Day of School.
We've had our first successful field trip to the Center of Puppetry Arts, and 2 moms.
We've had our first Math Bowl.
We've had our first Family Project, the Regions and Rivers of Georgia.
We've had laughter and tears, lost teeth and upset stomachs.
We even had an awesome Hands on Science day with great helpers.
In short, I hope we are building a great team, family of learners that share our highs and lows together.
Love,
Mrs. GW

Welcome to 2nd Grade
In one week, I will get to spend many days and weeks with your children.
I am looking forward to a great year! Sneak-a-Peak is Friday at 7:30-9:00 and 1:30-3:00, I would really like to meet each of you then, for the following reasons:
1. I can get to know who you and your child are.
2. You can drop off the school supplies with your child's name on them.
3. I can learn what medical issues your child may have.
4. I can learn how your child is going home Monday.
5. You can join PTA. I am the "T" and I have already joined the PTA for this school year.
I truly can not wait! I have been working diligently in the room and attending many meetings, trying to brush up on my skills as a teacher, to make your children more successful. I am looking forward to getting to know each of the kids; their personalities; strengths; worries; joys; favorites; and weaknesses. With this in mind, I want you to know that one of the main things I teach the kids is that learning takes place when we make mistakes... so, it is "ok" if we make mistakes. This is my motto with the kids.
It's "Okay" if I make mistakes!
I think everything we do follows this motto. At 7, we are still teaching our kids how to get along with others. If/When kids have behavior issues or conflicts, it is usually because they are still learning how their actions affect those around them. In most instances, they do not really mean to hurt their peers, or not follow classroom routines. I do a lot of talking with the children to figure out why there are outbursts or "mistakes" in their behaviors. I stress that the choicse they make can be changed. If I have to give consequences like time out or a visit to another room, it is to give them a chance to think about the issue and both of us time to calm down before we discuss the issue. When time out is given, or your child visits another teacher's room, you will receive a note on the Behavior Log in your child's "Take Home Binder". If I send home a note in the binder, please sign the note and return it daily. Also, I tell the kids that each day is a new day. If I make a mistake on Thursday, and I have written on the behavior log, then he/she should not have to worry that I will still be disappointed on Friday, I do not treat my students that way. Basically, make a mistake, deal with the consequences and keep it moving.
Classroom expectations are:
1. I will try my best when working!
2. I will try my best when playing or talking with others!
3. I will try my best when in specials, the hallway, and the lunch room!
4. I will try my best when following instructions!
"I will try my best!!!" is really my only rule.
When we go on field trips, if I am having challenges with your child following directions, then I will ask for a parent to attend the trip in order for your child to safely participate in the activity planned, and not left behind at the school. I cannot manage the class in a public environment if one of the children is unable or unwilling to follow the classroom procedures and school rules.
With this clearly stated, I hope we have a mutual understanding and trust between home and school. I am very excited about the year ahead and working with each of you.
