There are some great youtube videos that I shared with the kids today. One was a great re-write of "All about that Bass!"

The kids really enjoyed the first song, and thought that the 2nd was old!
I am shook by how fast this school year is going! And I think that February Break was much needed, but sooo long! I miss all my kids. My Rose hugs me daily, but there are about 17 other warm, little, squiggly, joyful kids that I miss greatly!

I miss the little things about being with the kids, like saying:
1. "Put your shoes on!" to my boys who like one shoe off and one shoe on! lol! Who knows that poem?
2. "Umm? Good Morning! I didn't see you already today."
3. "Is there pork in that? If yes, please go to another teacher's room for a few minutes."
4. "For Goodness Sakes!"
5. "Heavens to Betsy!"

I also miss their laughter, their smiles and excitement.
Most of all, I miss how smart and caring they are.

See you all tomorrow!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05885133795022001269noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8847248498529196835.post-60497381337729682322018-02-11T14:00:00.000-08:002018-02-11T14:33:50.447-08:00February 12-26thWe have an exciting week coming up!
Tuesday, we get to go to the Media Center for the AR store. Not many of the kids have earned more than 10 points this time. Sadly, we have many friends who have not earned 1 point. I hope that changes before the next AR store.

Wednesday, the kids are to have "friendship cards" with them to share with their classmates. They will pass the cards out during Literacy time. Then, we have guidance with Dr. Hyman and Mrs. Hale, at 10:30. Following guidance we'll eat lunch (cheese pizza) in the classroom. Many parents are coming in to help and enjoy our Friendship Party/Math Centers. Please let me know if you are joining us.

Our math centers are going to cover many math standards:
Ice Cream Sundaes= Addition and Subtraction Activities
Rewards and Prizes= Problem Solving Stories
Cupcakes and Cookies= Measuring Weight
Snack Time= Measuring Length

Friday, All of the 2nd Grade teachers are going to combine the students and teach different math lessons to different kids. We do this after lunch and before specials. This will give the kids the opportunity to learn from someone else who teaches the same math concepts as me, but may use different terms. Often times the kids love getting the chance to meet teachers with a different personality. We work closely together planning our weekly math lessons, so we look forward to the chance to make an impact on each others' kids. It is fun.

Homework for this week says to do SpellingCity.com. There are 10 activities on the list, but I really want them to choose 5 to complete. If they do more, that is okay too! There is also a reading log. I will collect that on Feb. 28th! Any students who has 6 hours of reading recorded, will receive a free ticket to Six Flags Over Ga. I will send a new addition sheet as many of the problems on the one sent home Friday have sums over 1,000. I don't want to confuse the kids just yet. So, if those problems are giving you trouble, skip them and I will send new ones tomorrow. Check out my youtube videos to help with the addition and subtraction practice.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05885133795022001269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8847248498529196835.post-29440840821029661402018-01-25T05:54:00.002-08:002018-01-25T05:54:40.735-08:00Donorschoose #FirstMillionToday they are matching all donations! What to expect the next couple weeks.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Days Away from School: Oh My!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Hope this doesn't become a habit this winter! Goodness, we've been through the wringer: Irma, Ice Storm, College Championship/traffic, and now another snow storm that closed schools from Texas to North Carolina! Craziness!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Just a Yankee, FYI for you:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> I hope all of our families fared well these past couple of cold days. I made it home safely Tuesday, but made sure to fill my tank up first. I am not sure how many of you are from the north and used to this cold, but I wanted to warn you that your gas can freeze. On days like we have had this week, or days they warn us about these temperatures, it's always a good idea to have more than half a tank. I learned the hard way, that leaving liquids like 12 packs of pop or laundry detergent is not a good idea! Oh, my poor little Neon! It sure did teach me a lot for those 6 years I had her! LOL! imagine my surprise when I went to empty my trunk, a few days after getting groceries, globs of unscented Cheer laundry detergent mixed with slushy diet coke all over. I can't say I was very "Cheer"ful cleaning up that mess!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">What does that mean for our up-coming days and lessons in F10?

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">We are going to have to back up to Tuesday and start from scratch.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Writing-

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">We are working on writing our opinions, and friendly letters. We have Pen-pals in Florida and South Dakota. I am pretty excited to have the kids writing with a purpose. Occasionally, they will be writing their new friends and I'm hoping to include their opinions in those letters, sometimes. We are talking about stating an Opinion and giving 3 reasons for that opinion. This genre of writing is good because the can use facts and emotions. Before the Holiday Break, we were working on facts like in a research project that we did together. This area of fact vs opinion is very tricky, for many of the kids still. They can argue their opinion about what is fun, tastes good, smells good, and any other topic that we all have our own point of view, but to write "how to" pieces or "characteristics of a mammal" and they start to put feelings into it. Having the kids writing to loved ones is a great way to help out at home.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Reading-

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I know some of the kids are worried about the AR party for the 2nd Quarter. I am pretty sure that it will be rescheduled, the PTA and Mr Estelle have been working hard to get it ready, so I doubt that they'll let the planning go to waste. The kids are doing very well on AR I have many classmates who did AR last year and are collecting their 100 point bracelets. Others who just started this year are getting close to their 25 point and 50 point bracelets. Can't wait to see how high many of the kids end up this year! I am not expecting to have many kids get 2 100s last week or this week, we just haven't gotten into our new routine all that well yet!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">According to our DRAs and other assessments in December, everyone is improving in their reading skills. I am so excited to see the kids enjoying books and looking for topics that are just right for them. This is the age where you see them swinging towards what may be personal interests, as opposed to when they were younger and they did things just because they had to. I love watching them develop their personalities.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Math-

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Here is where the "rubber meets the road!" Soon (last week of Jan.), you will be seeing the kids bring home 3-digit addition and 3-digit subtraction homework. The strategies do not change, we just do the same steps more than before. I really need the kids to show their work on paper. IF you are running out of lined paper, please let me know, I ask the kids often if they need more, but some never do! <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I have videos on youtube that you can watch or work with me on. Please feel free to ask me questions, this is not how we learned math and if you don't ask, it can get frustrating when you try to help the kids at home. If you subscribe to my channel then whenever I upload a new video it will notify you. Thanks, Leah for subscribing, I often forget that option.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">4 2-digit addends expanded form

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">4 2-digit addends base10

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Supplies-

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">1. I will be passing out the 3rd box of crayons to the kids next week, for those of you who sent them in like requested.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">2. I am unsure if the supply boxes we are using this year are not as good as they have been in the past, or if the kids are just much rougher on their supplies, but I have had 4 kids break them. If you see that I write a note in the agenda asking for supplies, don't be surprised.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">3. I made everyone a sweatshirt. Please have the kids bring either that shirt or a sweater to keep in their reading bags. The county controls the air and heat, and we often go from warm and toasty to chilly and shivers, thus the sweatshirts.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">4. Please be sure to have pencils, crayons, colored pencils or other stuff at home to work on homework. They are not supposed to be bringing the classroom supplies home until our last couple of days in May!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Other stuff-

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">1. We have a field trip on Feb 2nd. This is a trip that parents are not allowed on, so says the Cobb Safety Village. An officer or firefighter will be coming to talk to the kids on the 25th. I have to hand the permission slips to him that day. I will be sending the forms home with homework tomorrow (I hope). Ms Cox has be the head teacher on this trip, so I am telling you about it as I hear it. The kids Have to Have them by the 25th!!! Then the firefighter gives the kids homework that I have to turn in on the 2nd. More info will be coming next week about lunch.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">2. Mid-term check lists are going home Feb 9th. With all of the days missed so far, I will be playing catch-up fit some of the requirements. Please remember that even though the mid-term progress reports resemble the report card, they are just a snap-shot of where the kids are at with half the information taught.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">3. I will be at a church training the 25th-29th of January. Mrs. Slaughter is scheduled to stand in for me. The days will be run as normal and she is very good about keeping things up and moving. This is my last planned absence this year. I will still be available via text, but she really does a great job, and I have no worries.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">4. We will reschedule the weekly assessments for this week. I will add some (4 or 6) new words to the spelling list that went home last Friday, and give new math problems for next week. The next weekly assessments will take place Wednesday, Feb 1. I want them to get the spelling patterns and work with the words for a few consistent days before the assessments.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">5. Friendship Day- (Valentine's Day)- I will let you know what we are allowed to do for Friendship Day when the admin gives us our parameters.

I especially like the "Yes!" Brain, mindset. We work on having positive attitudes about our work when we are successful and when we come to road blocks. Instead of saying "Yes! I beat you", we are tying to encourage the kids to say, "Yes! My plan was successful!" We also teach the kids to say "How can I fix this? Let's try again, and make a new plan." instead of saying, "I'm dumb and never get things right!"
The first seven days are key to my project's success. If you know of someone who can help us financially, please let them know about donorschoose.com. You may be surprised that any amount helps! If you donate, you'll receive updates and photos of this project in action and my students' sincere gratitude. If you are unable to donate, you can still go back to the link and see the photos and get updates! I can almost hear the chorus of thank-yous from my kids already!

P.S. If you know anyone who might be interested in supporting public schools, please feel pass this message along and they can choose from thousands of other projects to support. Even helping someone else, helps all of us. Children all over this nation will one day be our leaders, let’s start supporting them now!

Some of the kids asked if they could bring their own games, and I said "If your family member (mom, dad, Grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle or special friend) comes to play the game, they can bring it." I do not want the kids bringing in games and loosing pieces.
HOUSE KEEPING NOTES:
⏰
1. Please have the kids on time (tardy bell is 7:50) we start work right away. Alot of kids are bringing cafeteria breakfast in at 7:50 which means we all are waiting to get the day started. Please try to drop of kids before 7:40 if they need breakfast.
🎟
2. Monday is last day to pay for PJ day Tuesday. $1 to be turned into Mrs. Nowlin, Monday Morning before 7:50.
✔️🥇
3. For the Math Bowl election, we had a 5 way tie in first election Elliott, Adrianne, Cayden, Aaliyah and Nehemiah all had 2 nominations, all students were allowed to be selected that did not participate in the first quarter’s Math Bowl. Only way this could happen was by 5 kids selecting anyone but themselves. I love that they really thought about who would do well, or better than themselves anyway. It also showed me who felt they could win for the classroom.
👪👨👩👧🎲💡🖍🚸🃏💬
4. Family Game Day will be Wednesday at 10:30 in Media Center. Schedule for Wednesday will be available Tuseday on Blog. This is a time of playing with the kids. We’ll have already eaten!
🏅🚧
5. Attendance is very important. Please remember the following times:
📌Tardy bell- 7:50. Cannot get perfect attendance if tardy.
📌Last time of day counted presentif coming after dr appointment- 10:30 kids after this time not counted for being present more than half day. Goes on record and needs a dr excuse.
📌earliest time to check kids out and still be counted present for school day- 11:35
I mention this because some parents are wondering, others are checking friends out after 9, and not returning. The state counts kids absent for entire day if they not here more than 51% of learning time! That means breakfast time is not counted.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05885133795022001269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8847248498529196835.post-68444563672112028762017-12-11T06:50:00.000-08:002017-12-11T06:50:20.119-08:00December Snow Days!I hope today’s blog finds you warm and content. We were without power all weekend and Thrilled that it returned yesterday. As I’m looking at the next 7 school days, I thought it best to touch base with all of you. Homework went home on Friday. I am going to push the due date on it and Friday’s assessments to Monday. Please have the kids do 3 addition and 3 subtraction problems each day.

In the mornings this week we will be working on county mandated assessments, such as DRAs, SRI, MRI and some of the kids will be retaking the Tenmarks 2nd Quarter assessment. It has 24 questions and a few kids finished in under 15 minutes. There is not much of a chance to grow from 1st time if they didn’t even pay attention to the questions. I would take me a minimum of 25 minutes to finish. All I need to see with each of these assessments is growth from August to now. You will receive the data on these assessments after the Winter Break in the Red Folder with the 2nd Report Card.

Tuesday, we have a family providing lunch for the class. They will be bringing Cheese Pizza. If your child does not care for cheese pizza, they will still have the opportunity to eat in the cafeteria, or bring lunch from the cafeteria back to the classroom to eat with us. Lunch from home kids are still allowed to bring their own if cheese pizza is not a favorite.

I hope you saw the homework packet. I am requesting that the kids bring in an old Adult sized T-shirt or button down shirt. We will be working on a following directions lesson that involves paint over a few days. Thanks for helping with this.

Family Game Day will be on Wednesday the20th, from 10:30-11:30. We have specials at 11:30-12:00. The kids who leave for Target will be gone all day on Tuesday, as their teacher Mrs. Murff will be retiring and it will be her last day with them. For the Family Game Day, all you need to bring is yourself and a sense of competition! We will be in the Library!
I am sorry it’s a long post, but I hope I have answered any questions you might have circling in the back of your mind.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05885133795022001269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8847248498529196835.post-57026612206264979792017-12-02T10:53:00.003-08:002017-12-02T11:08:51.844-08:00December 2017Don't blink! You might miss December altogether!

I am surprised that today is December 2nd. We only have 17 schools this month, and it is the end of the 2nd quarter. This means that everything will be going really fast, as if they haven't been flying all year.

In math, we are deepening, refining and solidifying out addition and subtraction strategies with 2-digit numbers. We have worked on measurement using different types of tools, inches, feet, and centimeters in rulers, yardsticks and meter sticks have been a part of our measurement too. The report card measurement standard is that they can solve word problems with measurement involved. We are also checking to see if the kids can solve 2-step word problems. Next, we'll be learning how to tell time to the 5 minutes on an analog clock (the round kind with minute and hour hands). All the kids seem to know how to read digit clocks, so they will be making analog clocks from digital time. Here are a few links to help with addition and subtraction.

In Reading and Writing we have been working on informational topics. Each guided reading group has been reading non-fiction or factual books. Writing informational texts will continue into the 3rd quarter. Right now, the biggest challenge is not writing "I like" and opinion sentences. We will get to Opinion Writing in the 3rd quarter, but have to have Informational down pat, because the Opinion writing calls for facts to support their opinion. The best way to help with this at home is to have them writing about the special activities that you will be doing this next month.

Now that it is officially December, I can share with you our plans for the last few days of December. Our 2nd Grade team always does a Stocking Stuffer activity. I will hang the stockings Monday and any day up until the 18th of December, your children can bring in items to put in the stockings.We ask that the children bring in small gifts and candy to help stuff the stockings that are hung in the classroom. Just to be safe, please make sure that there are no nuts or peanut butter in the treats. Unfortunately we have some friends allergic to nuts, and Reese's Cups are a favorite of mine! I'm already getting my fillers to slide into the stockings. The Dollar Tree, Wal-mart, K-mart and Target always have cute little items that you can get many things for cheap prices. We have 15 children who are able to celebrate the holidays.

We will have our "Holiday" Celebration on Wednesday Dec. 20 at 10:30 in Library. So that all of our class members can participate, we will have a "Family Game Day" instead. I'll bring the games, all you need to do is show up and play with the children. Can you beat them at blokus? Are they better at boggle? How well do you play scrabble? Come and see!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05885133795022001269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8847248498529196835.post-12325217484381613312017-11-12T18:09:00.001-08:002017-11-12T18:09:34.645-08:00Math Lesson 11-8-17

Coming up with ideas to talk about is easy, and yet putting words to paper really makes me nervous. No wonder our kids feel nervous about it too! Now we are trying to get them to write, and asking them to make it interesting. Watching some of these videos, makes me wish we had Youtube.com or even the internet when I was in 2nd grade. Maybe I would more comfortable writing now if we had these awesome resources!
We will be learning about the Creek and Cherokee Native Americans and how George Oglethorpe and the British settlers changed life in Georgia. I learned a new presentation app today called SWAY. This is what we will be learning, life then and now how are they similar and different. How did these three Georgians impact Georgia today?
I think this video will help our kids remember what they are really looking for when they go back and reread their writing. I know I still do all of this when I write!

I am sharing this link with you because this is the type of writing that we are focusing on this quarter. The children and I have been talking about informational writing for a few weeks, but writing is way different than talking. We are going to be digging deeper and trying again. Jumping from narrative to informational writing can be confusing because up to now, the kids have grown used to writing their likes and dislikes, not just facts.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05885133795022001269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8847248498529196835.post-15771592593526633792017-10-31T10:55:00.000-07:002017-10-31T10:55:10.146-07:00Homework in F10Parents, I wanted to remind you about our homework procedures.

1. Homework is typically given out on Fridays. This allows you as parents to help your students get a jump start on the weekend, especially if you have a busy weekend.

2. Reading is the most important thing your child can do everyday.

3. Homework is due on the following Friday, unless it says a different due date on the top.

Things to know about homework:

It should be a review of what is happening in the classroom, not something new that I have never taught.

If it is a math strategy, I have been working with the children for at least 2 weeks before sending it home for practice.

If you have any questions, please reach out to me and I will help.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05885133795022001269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8847248498529196835.post-13116238057976439942017-10-31T10:44:00.001-07:002017-10-31T10:44:59.112-07:002nd Quarter StandardsThe Power Standards that we are focusing on for the 2nd Quarter are as follows.
